GENERAL HEALTH INFORMATION
The level of community sanitation is high in Italy. The sewage
system is adequate. While there are no unusual features or special
health risks, persons suffering from or susceptible to allergies
or respiratory diseases may require proper medication.
MILAN HOSPITALS AND CLINICS
Medical facilities in Italy are adequate for any emergencies
that may arise. All public hospitals are operated by the National
Health Service. Rates are valid all over Italy, and include all
medical services (also surgery), plus bed and board. Current
rates (subject to review in 1997) are the following:
- ordinary ward: Lire 560,000 per day or EURO equivalent, all
included
- intensive care: Lire 2,400,000 per day or EURO equivalent, all included.
If you are a resident of Italy and enjoy National Health Service
coverage, hospital services will be provided to you and your
dependents free of charge. Visitors, or persons not enrolled
under such plan, are expected to pay full hospital charges and
then claim a reimbursement from their insurance carrier, if applicable.
Hospitals do not take credit cards; most, however, will agree
to bill patients after discharge. There are also a number of
private clinics, offering a wide range of medical services. Charges,
although variable, are generally much higher than those applied
by hospitals.
MEDICAL EMERGENCIES
In case of an emergency, head for the nearest hospital; most
general and regional hospitals have emergency rooms which operate
around the clock. To call an ambulance, dial 118 (toll free)
from any telephone in Italy. In Milan, you can also call the
Red Cross on 3883. Help can also be sought through the Police,
by dialing 113, which is equivalent to 911 in the US.
